    Plugged in, not charging...

Battery claims it is at 97% charge... I have not unplugged the AC Adapter at any point in the last couple of months while the system was on, so that battery SHOULD BE reading 100%.

I only just started keeping the battery plugged in while using the system on all AC Power for the sake of not worrying if the battery is going to explode just sitting on the desk, permanently lose charge capacity, or something else. My mom's battery has been plugged in while she uses the AC for the last year without this issue... that said, the last time we had this problem, with a Dell 1525, the MB fried out taking all the fans, the AC adapter AND the battery out of commission.

What do I need to check, or run, to figure out what the heck is going on here? I don't want to do anything until I'm sure whatever it is won't cause any further, more serious problems. I'm out of the warranty... so need to be careful here.

Also, I did recently suffer a BSOD but suspect Silverlight from Netflix as the cause as that is what I was doing at the time of that incident (it crashed just before that BSOD), however now I've noticed this... I just don't know.

Thank you for the help. =(

Batteries should be re-cycled (allowed to drain competely) every month or so, or the lose the capacity to fully charge suspect that is what is going on here.

Try to re-cycle per mfr's directions.

I did that for the first 14 or so mos, it's only been about 3 that I've not done this. My mom has never done this in the 2 and something years she's had her lappy, but her's isn't suffering this issue? Well, I'll go ahead and let it drain until the warning point and then try to get it juiced back up... have a feeling something much worse is going on than that though.

Edit: to be honest here, my concern isn't so much for the battery. I just want to try and be sure this isn't the MB threatening to crap out on me, or else the AC. The battery can die off for all I care. This is desktop replacement setup... would be nice to have the battery, but if it's on its way out that's just fine. Just please God, not the MB or AC! LOL

    I'm assuming this is a Lithium-Ion battery.

Your symptom is typical of an aging L-ion battery. These have a life span measured in recharging cycles. As they age they discharge faster and faster until nearly useless. And a recharge that never gets to 100% is also typical.

Your first step should be to try a new replacement battery. If the condition persists the next most likely issue would be the power supply/charger. Many laptop battery vendors recommend always changing the charger with the battery for this reason - a poor performing charger can kill a battery (slow death).

Huh... well, drained it down to 10%, got the 6min warning and plugged it in and now it's charging again. Guess this system has that new feature that blocks the charge if the battery hasn't been cycled in a while (just read about that)... good to know. Still going to keep an eye on it... and will report back if it doesn't charge fully or does it again.

    Thanks again for the help!

I'll also go back to charging it up, letting it sit for 30 days, then draining and repeat.
