HardwareID = MAC address? For MoBo and USB devices? Find out model?

Just to clarify my point of view:

The hardwareID is not (never) equal to the MAC address
Even not for network cards.
is that correct?

Is there a way to find out the
- vendor
- model name
for a given hardwareID?

Let's take two examples:

USB\VID_0483&PID_7554&REV_0210
or
USB\VID_0572&PID_1329&REV_0100

Is there a public available web catalog for such hardwareIDs?

I found that just doing a google for the hardware Id seems to work.
