Use the other CPU to upgrade the BIOS and make sure to read and know what you are doing before you do it or you will end up with a useless MB

If the question is, "can I pop off the heatsink and tinker around" like I would pop the hood of a car open... then no. If you got a dead cpu there's nothing you can do to bring it back to life. Don't try to circumvent reality. It's dead; send it back.

There are no moving parts to replace and the parts that are there are too small for you to even see... so forget it.

If you reset the bios, either by clearing cmos or by pulling the battery on an otherwise fully functioning machine, and the machine doesn't boot up... it's dead. Does your board have LED's that tell you what's failing the post?

You should not need a bios update. That board supported the i5-750 back in 09. Feature - Overclocking Intel's Core i5 750 | bit-tech.net

    It's dead...

assuming the motherboard supports both i3 and i5 and that they are the same socket type LGA 1156 then it should work.

do you have another i5 capable motherboard to test it on, preferbly one actually running an i5 already?

how did it come packed from e-bay? in the manufacters box unopened? or in some bubble wrap?

was the cpu exposed to static during or prior to fitting? exposure to static could have been from yourself or not packed properly in an antistatic bag if it wasn't in the oem box.

did you have any difficulty fitting it into the slot, did you have to force it or did it just slot right in?

cpu's are very delicate sure we can get away with handling them sometimes but it takes just one incedent of a static charge to kill them, static discharge accounts for a rather large amount of failures in components excluding overheating and overclocking.

    Dead CPU.
Very rarely it happens......but it does happen.
I'd contact the seller immediately. If the seller is unwilling to refund your money, open a case with either Ebay or Paypal.
