    Question about rams

    First sorry for my english.

If a ram doesn't seat proberly, can I see it in bios or windows and can I use it without any problems? My computer only freezes when memory usage is high. Can it be a ram problem?

I have random freezes, sometimes when Idle, sometimes not idle. When I test rams with Memtest after a Windows freeze, memtest is freezing too. I put out rams and put it again, memtest and windows dont freeze for a while. After 1 or 1,5 weeks, problem comes again. "Help me !"

Hi dm01 and welcome to W7 Forums

If your RAM isn't seated correctly in your motherboard, you run a very great risk of damaging your motherboard or RAM or even both. So ensure that it is seated correctly and securely. Make sure that you insert the sticks using the correct orientation, and don't force them. If they don't go in, check the orientation. One thing to watch out for is the latching clips at either end of the slots. Ensure that both of these are in the open position before inserting the RAM and ensure that both click into place when it is inserted.

If the problem continues after doing as Dwarf recommended, try running the test with only one stick of ram installed. If that works, then try each of the other sticks in the same fashion. If a test fails, try that stick in a different ram slot. If a stick fails regardless of where it is installed, the stick is bad. If more than one stick fails in a certain slot, but not others, then that slot (motherboard) is bad.

Some good points there. I forgot to mention about checking for any possible reason which prevents the correct seating of the RAM, such as dust or other contamination in the slots. This might or might not prevent the RAM from seating correctly, but it will probably make it so that the contacts aren't made securely.

Thanks for replys. I want to add something. When windows freezes, then memtest freezes at start too. If I start windows, windows is freezing too. Freezes increase after one freeze.

I never ran memtest for 1-2 hours. Only about 10-15 minutes. It is necessary ? If so, tests will be hard for me, with every RAM variations.

Can it be a heat problem about RAMS ?

(I checked rams and slots, it looks fine and tight to me..)

Now I am testing each stick separately. I will tell if I can find something new.

In order to get this solved we're going to need a lot more information about the machine. If you don't know the make and model #'s of all your components, download, install, and then run speccy, it's free: Speccy - System Information - Free Download

    Pentium 4 3.20 ghz
    Gigabyte GA-g31m-es2l
    1+1 ddr2 533mhz ram
    600 W PSU Highpower

I tried prime95 and one more cpu program, comp. freezes every time when I start. Sometimes after 15-20 sec, sometimes in 1-3 minutes. I ran this tests, with every ram combination. Is this a CPU problem ?

you should let mem test do at least 1 complete pass which does take a while, it will at the very least answer the ram question, you should be able to run memtest with both sticks at the same time however it could affect the results in some bizzare way.

to be sure use some compressed air or hoover with long plastic nozel to clear the ram slots before running the tests just to make sure they are clean and clear of anything, things as small as hair have been known to cause ram failure.

if after the memtest there isn't any faults then dwarf and seeker and fumz will be better able to assist you if they can rule out the ram as a possible problem.

cpu's don't tend to run once they go, it's a case of cpu dead....nothing happens at all, likewise with ram, however ram can post and boot when faulty and then fail shortly after when data tries to pass through the bad blocks.

I would also make sure that your computer is clean and all cooling is working properly.
