Verbatim external hard drive not picking up

I just bought a Verbatim 1TB external hard drive (USB 2.0, 3.5") and my PC with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit is not picking it up.

I have tested the USB port and it definitely works. I have tried searching for new devices. I have tried the hard drive on friend's PC also with Windows 7 and it worked.
Is there some setting or something I can change on my PC to get it to pick up the hard drive?

Did you use the same cable at your friends?

It mentions on the Verbatim website that some users need to use a power booster cable. Here is the link to it.

Is the drive seen by Disk Management? Click start, right click on computer, click manage, click disk management.

Sometimes new drives cannot be seen in explorer because they have not been assigned a drive letter, but as Commadore Pet suggested they are seen in disk management. If Disk management sees them, right click and select add or change drive letter or path, click add and windows will allow you to select any drive letter not already assigned to another drive, select a drive letter and click OK or Add. It will then be seen in explorer and will now be usble.

Had the very same problem with a Verbatim external hard drive whereby I could not find the drive on a Windows 7 64 system and thereby files stored on the drive. I solved the problem thanks to the forum and by using Partition Wizard Home Edition by Mini Tool Googled and downloaded from the web.

Partition Wizard showed up the drive but it had no drive character assigned to it. This omission was then easily corrected thereby solving my problem.
