Dwarf, to emphasize your point, I was reading on Overclockers net when the 2600K's first came out. They were seeing how high they could overclock them. They found that some were better than others and started making lists of batch numbers. They narrowed it down to which batch numbers to look for because some overclocked much better than others.

To narrow it down even further, even CPUs that originated as neighbours on the same wafer during manufacture can have very different overclocking capabilities.

Yes all the CPU's on a wafer are tested, those that pass high tests will become the i-7 extreme or Phenom X6 Black Editions. those that fail some tests will become i3's and Athlons or Semprons.

This is why the high end CPU's cost more. Fewer of them meet the criteria per wafer.

Yeah I found that out the hard way . the system is ok for now.

Did you read the link I sent you? It will help you too overclock your system but you have to do it slowly, in steps, testing all the way.
