Windows 7 - 1st problem w/this build-no ROM Drives |

1st problem w/this build-no ROM Drives I just got around to formatting the HDD and then iinstalled two programs, Streets & Trips 2010 and Roxio Creator Pro 2011.
After that, the ASUS Sabertooth screen stays on for a long time, the welcome screen loads for a long time and I had no DVD-ROM Drives.
I did restart and no ROM Drives, then I turned it off and on, I now have one but not the other.
No red or yellow anywhere in Device Manager.
There was nothing for ROM Drives in Device Manager either, until I shut it down and then started again. It's showing just one ROM Drive.
What gives with this craziness?

Well first the obvious I would power down unplug pop the case and make sure all the cables are in good shape and properly secured at both ends (power and data cables both)
Then I would try telling the bios to refresh the escd data (if that bios has the option most asus boards do)
It sounds like a simple IRQ problem, or a cable issue. You should check those cables even if you are fairly sure they are good as shorts there can actually destroy the controller on the motherboard. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Insane hobo technologies. ;-) OS Windows 7 x64 sp1 CPU Intel i7 2600k Motherboard Asrock z68 extreme 4 gen 3 Memory G.skill Ripjaw 16gigs @ 1866 Graphics Card Nvidia gtx580 (evga) Sound Card Integrated HD audio + hdmi Monitor(s) Displays 24" ASUS widescreen + 42" insignia Screen Resolution 1080p (1920x1080) Keyboard Microsoft wireless 3000 (v2) Mouse MS - wireless 5000 (bluetrack) PSU 1 kilowatt SLI/Crossfire rated Silverstone modular Case NZXT Phantom + additional 220 fan Cooling Air. Are they being picked up correctly by the BIOS? If the BIOS can't see them, then neither can Windows or any other OS on the machine. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home Built, N/A OS Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit & 64-bit both SP1 CPU AMD Athlon (tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 7550 @2.5GHz Motherboard Gigabyte GA-MA770-ES3 Memory 2 x 2GB PC2-6400 (DDR2-800), Ganged Mode, (4GB total) Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB Sound Card Realtek High Definition on board solution (ALC 892) Monitor(s) Displays ViewSonic VA1912w Widescreen (VGA) Screen Resolution 1440x900 Keyboard Microsoft Digital Media Pro Keyboard (USB) Mouse Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000 (USB) PSU XFX Pro Series 850W Semi-Modular Case Antec NSK 4000B II Cooling 1 x 80mm Front Inlet (with filter) 1 x 120mm Rear Exhaust Hard Drives OCZ Petrol SSD 64GB SATA III

I'll check the cables but both ROM Drives where available until I loaded Roxio and Streets. | My System Specs | | |

Well what Dwarf asked applies there, are the devices appearing in the bios to begin with?
If they do not the software isn't even part of the equation.
If they are showing in the bios but being ignored by windows then it is possible the software has caused an issue.
The escd data reset is usually in the pnp section of the bios. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Insane hobo technologies. ;-) OS Windows 7 x64 sp1 CPU Intel i7 2600k Motherboard Asrock z68 extreme 4 gen 3 Memory G.skill Ripjaw 16gigs @ 1866 Graphics Card Nvidia gtx580 (evga) Sound Card Integrated HD audio + hdmi Monitor(s) Displays 24" ASUS widescreen + 42" insignia Screen Resolution 1080p (1920x1080) Keyboard Microsoft wireless 3000 (v2) Mouse MS - wireless 5000 (bluetrack) PSU 1 kilowatt SLI/Crossfire rated Silverstone modular Case NZXT Phantom + additional 220 fan Cooling Air. I personally haven't used roxio or nero in years, there are free and open source programs that do all the same work, in many cases faster and without any of the problems the horribly bloated software known as nero and roxio have. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Insane hobo technologies. ;-) OS Windows 7 x64 sp1 CPU Intel i7 2600k Motherboard Asrock z68 extreme 4 gen 3 Memory G.skill Ripjaw 16gigs @ 1866 Graphics Card Nvidia gtx580 (evga) Sound Card Integrated HD audio + hdmi Monitor(s) Displays 24" ASUS widescreen + 42" insignia Screen Resolution 1080p (1920x1080) Keyboard Microsoft wireless 3000 (v2) Mouse MS - wireless 5000 (bluetrack) PSU 1 kilowatt SLI/Crossfire rated Silverstone modular Case NZXT Phantom + additional 220 fan Cooling Air. I hear ya Got any suggestions on free programs.
I went to Roxio because of Nero"s BS.
I didn't see "refresh the escd data" in the PnP section.
I had USB Legacy disabled and thought I had the PnP set to yes for plug and play right?
This time the bios page stayed on for a good two minutes and then the black starting windows screen was on forever.
Something is really whacked here.
Going to remove Roxio and check cables next.
This thing is using an OCZ SSD. All the bios post and loading at the beginning was pretty fast before this.
Formatting the HDD was just for my storage drive. The SSD is only 80GB.
Also I just noticed the ROM is gone again

The default recommendation around here for burning tends to be ImgBurn, which is pretty near flawless in my experience and works fine on Win 7.
