My motherboard box says it support Core 2 Extreme.

Would I be better of getting an i7 (that one perhaps), with a new mobo?
Spend the extra and get the 2600k, with its unlocked multiplier. Get a third-party CPU cooler to match, to make the CPU overclock more reliably.

    That's if you're upgrading soon.

You may be able to re-use your DDR3 RAM. Is it 1.5V or 1.65V? Socket 1155 seems to prefer 1.5V.
I'm not entirely sure. If I were to but a new mobo as well, how much would it set me back? What would be the cheapest (good quality) mobo I can buy?

$120USD, ASUS or Gigabyte would be my choices.

Yeah, I'm an ASUS fan too. So buying a new mobo and i7 would put me back about 400-500 dollars?

Ya. 2600K and a mobo here in the US is about $435 ($315 for the proc and $120 for the mobo)
