sound like your battery has died, will it not last anything more than a second or so? if so ur battery has gone, or the chip inside has had some misfunction

If the battery is still under warranty you can get it replaced with a new one -- and just meanwhile use your laptop directly plugged into the electricity. If the battery has no warranty it sounds like you'll have to purchase a new one. But before you do that, if you have someone with enough skill to check your system to make sure the problem is actually in the battery and not anything else (like for example the power cord itself or the ac adapter), then do that before you spend your money on a new battery that might not be necessary.
