A 64 bit version of Windows would be required to make all 4GB
accessible, but the 32 bit versions allow 4GB of RAM to be present. (Home Starter limits it to 2GB.) Some people can't bear the thought of not having all of their RAM available to Windows, but aside from that it works OK.
On a laptop, I recommend using only identical DIMMs. The laptops I've played with lack the manual BIOS settings that would make it easier for RAM of different makes to work together nicely.
