HELP.. USB Ports Still Powered on Even When PC Switched off

Hi, this is my first post on this forum and i created an account solely for seeking help on this subject for which i couldn't find a solution anywhere on the internet. Recently, i've been facing this strange problem that whenever i turn off my laptop, the mouse connected to one of my USB ports is still powered on EVEN THOUGH my laptop is turned off and it's not charging which means power is still being supplied to ALL the USB ports as i tried plugging in my mouse to a different USB port and yet same results.
    Here are my specs:
    Win 7 Premium (32bit) OS
4 gb ram, intel core i3 2.13 GHz
Laptop model: Compaq CQ41 227 TX

I think that to fix the issue, something needs to be changed in the BIOS settings in the boot up screen but i couldn't find out what to do so please give me a step by step solution with detailed explanation to resolve this issue.

    Thanks.

Could this be a wireless mouse with a USB dangle? If so, it probably has a battery and an on/off switch.

Nope, it's a wired USB mouse.

    Hello Sam, welcome to SF!

Let's check a couple of things first:

    1. when you say USB is still powered... is that also the case when the external powerline/adapter is not connected to the LT?

    2. Are you positively sure your LT is powered off ... and not sleeping or hibernating?

    3. Have you checked your powerplan and device manager settings (for usb and the ketboard/mouse) on the energy settings + teh switches for letting them wake up the LT?

    Hi Sam,

    Welcome to the forums.

Does your power supply have a on/off switch on the back of your computer.

If so, this is normal and is nothing to worry about really but you canh turn that switch off if you wish, just remeber to switch it back on before turning your PC on.

This happens because some USB ports allow power to continue going thorugh to them which is very handy if you charge a mobile or MP3 device using the PC, this way it can carry on charging those devices whilst the PC is off.

If you unplug you mouse after the pc has shut off and then plug it back in again, in some cases it should'nt turn back on till you turn the PC back on but if it does turn back on then again, like i said, don't worry.

Hope this helps to explain your query.

Ah, just re read your post, and noticed you are running a leptop, try unplugging the power adaptor or as MvdB said, check your power settings.

Hi Lucky, I think his worry is that he has a LT, not a DT, and is worried the usb power might unload battery power when the LT is off...

    Cheers,

I find it strange that when the laptop is off and charging cable is plugged in, then it behaves normally (USB not powered) but as soon as i remove the charging cable, the USB ports become powered on. I can't keep the laptop charging forever.. please help.

EDIT: Just checked the power options and nothing helpful there it just says some USB selective suspend setting, which is enabled for both the cases (on battery and charging). I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the power plan settings as i've been using the same plan settings since a long time but this thing happened only recently.

I doubt that any noticeable amount of power would be drawn in this situation
You could go to Device Manager, USB and right click on the USB hubs, select properties, Power Management and ensure there is a tick in the box Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, on the down side you may find that the ports get switched off when you are using the laptop.

You may want to check and see if you have an app charger application installed. Some computers do so that you can charge your smart phone or ipod even if the computer is off.
