transfer rate from hd to hd slows right down! Hi Guys,
Just wondering if anyone knew the cause to transfer rates slowing right down in windows.
I have 10 x 1gb files. I am copying and pasting them from one drive to another.
Speed starts off at 1.2GB per second, then 600MB, then 300, 200, 100 and then at about half way through it sits at about 60 till it finishes.
Does anyone know why this happens? I want 1.2GB the whole time!
Any ideas ?
thanks!

Whatever you are using, transfer speed normally does that when transfering multiple files. Try with 1 file or take the 10 1GB fikes and zip them into 1 file and transfer that. See what your readings are then.
Also, your transfer speeds are also limited by the drive you are transfering to. No matter how fast you are able to transfer, the receiving drive can only write so fast. You may want to run a test on the hard drives to determine their max rates, both read and write. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home Brew - Always under construction OS Windows 7 X64 Professional/Windows 8 CPU intel i7-2600K Motherboard Asus P8Z68 V-Pro/GEN 3 Memory 8GB G.Skill Sniper DDR3-2133 (2X4GB) Graphics Card EVGA 670 2GB Sound Card Asus Xonar Monitor(s) Displays Asus 24" LCD VW246H Screen Resolution 1920X1080 Keyboard Logitech G510 Mouse Logitech G500/Logitech Wireless PSU CORSAIR HX850W Case Cooler Master HAF X Cooling Corsair H100 w/ 4 noctua fans in push/pull. That sounds about right for disk to disk. It usually is about 1/2 the slowest drive speed. The estimate of the speed starts out optimistic. You can't expect a rate that is faster than a disk drive can deliver. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home built (GeneO industries)/Model 2 OS Windows 7 64 bit SP1 CPU i5 2500k @ 4.5 GHz, 1.256V 120 GFlop (with AVX) Motherboard ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 Memory 16GB (4GBx4) 1600MHz G.skill Ripjaws X 8-8-8-24 Graphics Card Asus Nvidia ENGTS450, 1GB 4030 MHz DDR5 clock, 915 Mhz GPU Sound Card Onboard Realtek HD Monitor(s) Displays NEC Spectraview 2490WUXi-SV Screen Resolution 1920 x 1200 Keyboard HP Wireless Mouse HP wireless PSU Antec TruePower New 650W Case Fractal Design "Define R3" Cooling CM Hyper 212+ push/pull, 5 120mm, 1 140mm case fans Hard Drives Crucial 128GB M4 (system), 2x WD Caviar 1TB Black internal (data), 1x Seagate 750G Barracuda Internal (backups), 1x WD Blue 6Gb/s 320GB Internal, 1x Corsair F40 SSD for cache, 1x 2TB eSata WD20EARS Green, 2x 500GB Seagate external USB, 1x 350GB exte Internet Speed 25.7 Mb/s down, 4.5 Mb/s up Other Info USB 3.0 x4 , SATA III x4, eSATA x3, SATA II x4, USB 2.0 x8. 2 Samsung DVD R/W drives.

I often copy or move files off my HDD to a USB attached HDD or flash drive. I have the same experience. Starts real fast and slows until finished. If you are running GB/s speed, that is very fast. Mine starts out at about 150MB/s. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Brittechnologies II OS Windows 7 Ultimate X86 SP1 CPU i5-2550K differing speeds depending on the day Motherboard ASUS P8X68-V PRO/GEN3 Memory 16GB G.Skill Sniper 2133MHz, 4X4GB Graphics Card ASUS ENGTX460 DirectCU/2DI/1GD5 GeForce GTX 460 Sound Card Onboard Realtek 5-1 Monitor(s) Displays Samsung P2570HD Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Old Dell USB From 10 yrs Ago Mouse Gigabyte m6900 wired PSU Corsair HX650W Case Inwin Dragon rider Cooling Hyper 212 EVO w/two Noctua fans @1300 RPM Hard Drives TBA Internet Speed 8-19 Mbs down, 3-4 Mbs up Comcast Cable Other Info 5 fans, LG Bluray/R/RE, ASUS DVD/R/RW |

Hi, I am transfering them from internal drives using SATA2 drives 7200rpm.
It does actually transfer at around 600MB per second, because when I transfer all 10 over to the other drive, the first 1GB file finishes in about 2 seconds and I can open it up etc and its all fine, the next file takes longer, and the 3rd takes even longer etc etc.
Not sure why its fast to start with and then slows off | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number dell xps17 702x OS 7 home premium 64bit CPU intel i7 2720qm Motherboard dell something Memory 16gb 1333mhz Graphics Card nvidia 555 3d 3gb Sound Card dont know Monitor(s) Displays laptop display PSU laptop Case laptop Cooling laptop Hard Drives 2 x 500gb 7200 drives transfer rate from hd to hd slows right down! problems?
