Windows can not connect to a system event notification service

I have an iMac 27" running OSX 10.6, also running windows 7 home premium via bootcamp. I have a Belkin 4 port powered hub connected to the computer using one of the usb ports on the back. We plugged in a usb powered Wii controller recharger to charge the controller and that worked great. Then, the charger was INCORRECTLY DISCONNECTED. That is when the trouble started. Upon a reboot, I get the following error message:

Windows could not connect to a System Event Notification Service service. This problem prevents standard users from logging onto the system. Review the System Event log for details about why the service did not respond

Home screen now looks slightly different. Like Aero is gone. Icons near the clock show a very small icon for the previous desktop and when I hover over that icon, is says show desktop and something else like show icon but clicking on either does nothing. I read a little about this problem and tried to reset the Winsock, but no good. Any troubleshooting suggestions?
