Will windows 7 work just as fast as XP on my desktop?

    I have pre-ordered windows 7 Home Premium.

    My specs are as follows:

    AMD Sempron 3000+ processor 1.80GHz

    2GB RAM

GE FORCE FX 5500 256mb ATP Graphics Card

I have done the windows 7 upgrade advisor and it says I meet all the requirements.

I am curretnly running windows xp, and it is working good.

Will Windows 7 be slower than xp, if so by how much?
I don't want to get windows 7 and realise that it hogs cpu and ram memory.

Do you think my graphics card is too old? If so, any suggestion on a new compatiable one?

    I have looked at
SAPPHIRE 100175L Radeon X1650PRO 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retailbut I'm not sure whether that will be fully supported by windows 7, etc.

I pre-ordered the home european version from Pc world for £45, so I won't make a big loss.

Windows 7 will run. But not smoothly. The AMD CPU is a bit old. I havn't tried windows 7 without Areo but a lot of the processes will take up a lot of CPU. 2 GB of ram is fine. The graphics card will play a role one how fast Areo will go on your pc, so yeah I suggest you upgrade that as well as the cpu. But mainly CPU upgrade is in order. If you still have doubts, just try it yourself, and take a look.

The best thing to do if you have the space is to

Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP

That way you can have the best of both worlds. You can then make a decission on whether or not to completely kill XP

    Hope this helps :)

Since you checked the specs for win 7 (in advisor) and it passed I would not be overly concerned abt your graphics card. Win 7 will feel abt as fast as xp and light years faster than vista. My card is 256mb integrated and it works. If anything I would consider a touch more ram and ram is cheap.

Your RAM should be fine as far as Windows 7 is concerned. The CPU could use an upgrade, but I don't think it would be mandatory.

The video card is probably your biggest issue. The newest drivers (that work with Win 7) no longer support your video card, nor the newer card you mentioned looking up. While the Upgrade Advisor is correct that the computer would still function, the graphics would be very sluggish and choppy. May we assume that your computer only has AGP slots, and no PCI-Express?

If you have a spare hard drive available, just plop it in, download the FREE RC1 release of Windows 7 and try it out. That's the only way you will know for sure.

Hard drives are so cheap these days and switching back and forth between 1 hard drive and other is extremely easy to do.

Just to save you some time, don't bother trying to run a virtual machine to test Windows 7. Sempron procs don't support virtualization so it will be horribly slow. The only way to know for sure is to either find someone with a very similar setup, or try an install for yourself. However, Windows7 will easily run on it, there is no doubting that. Speed is the only issue.

I guess W7 will "run" on almost anything. the question is will it run so that you can work? I just installed it on mylaptop to try it out. works well. Maybe try out a leaked 7600 version. People say it woudl be faster than 7100. I have 7100 and it is faster than Vista.

on my laptop RC 7100 feels as fast as XP. but it is a dual core. Vista (and possibly W7) d a great job using multiple cores better than XP. but that doesn't help you either.

My laptop has onboard grafix or whatever it has. So W7 itself works fine. Not sure if you don't have up to date drivers. For my desktop I'm jsut using W7 drivers that are included since Gigabyte doesn't have W7 drivers yet.

I assume since you paid for W7 you will want to use it anyway. Especially since a newer CPU would not cost more than W7.

    It will run.
