Home Media NAS

Hi all. I am thinking about getting a NAS for my home network. I quite like the look of the Iomega Cloud edition. Affordable Network Attached Storage, multimedia and external hard drives from Iomega. Has anyone any experience of it on Windows 7. I already have 2 Iomega USB drives and found them reliable.

Qnap, not necessarily the cheapest but great support, constant firmware updates, good resale value on eBay

I've been researching into one for my own home network and had zeroed in on Seagate blackarmor 1 tb/ 2tb NAS and seagate goflex home 1tb/ 2tb. You might take a look at those 2.

Looks good but a bit outside my price range once you add in the drive.

Of the two the Blackarmor looks more to my needs. It seems to have similar facilities to the Iomega Cloud Edition I was looking at. On the other hand the goflex is upgradable.

Decision decisions... Life is never simple. I'll post back when I make my choice.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your advice. in the end I went with my own choice the Iomega Home Network Cloud Edition. So far it is going well. Setting it up was a doddle and it integrates with the Windows 7 file system very easily. Performance wise I am limited by my laptop's network card a Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller. it has a top speed of 100Mb/s but I am getting very nearly that on both read and write. It also integrates well with my TV media link (well it ought to that's Iomega too). I haven't tried the internet access yet but I will in the near future.

Iomega NAS Cloud Edition Problems

Not quite so happy now. Two major problems.

1. Access through windows explorer is flakey. It loses connection to the device every so often even though the device can still be accessed via a browser. Lots of suggestions on the Iomega Forum but none seem to completely solve the problem.

2. The Personal Cloud feature uses an unsigned device driver which Win 7 x64 doesn't support.

My advice ATM is not to get one until they have sorted these problems.

Whilst I don't know your machine, some thoughts on problem 1, have you ability to control whether the drives sleep or spin down, have you checked your windows control panel power and device manager options to similarly not let network connections sleep, rather select performance?
