    Code:

Platform Power Management Capabilities:Supported Sleep States
Sleep states allow the computer to enter low-power modes after a period of inactivity. The S3 sleep state is the default sleep state for Windows platforms. The S3 sleep state consumes only enough power to preserve memory contents and allow the computer to resume working quickly. Very few platforms support the S1 or S2 Sleep states.
    S1 Sleep Supported false
    S2 Sleep Supported false
    S3 Sleep Supported true
    S4 Sleep Supported true
This is kind of interesting, saying some of the sleep states are supported. Is there power or suspend state setting accessible in your BIOS? If so set it to S3.

mmm yes fairly strange. just checked BIOS no power settings within there, which is strange but conceivable

it does say at the end of that sentence "Very few platforms support the S1 or S2 Sleep states"

so its what is supported by OS, so windows 7 must only support S3, S4

You might try the Default power settings for Balanced and Power saving. Gotta admit this is odd and I don't know what else to try.
Yes, S3 should be the default for most BIOSes.

Thanks Rich that BIOS has some terms I've not seen before.

On my HP desktop I press F1 to enter BIOS, but if I press F11, there are more settings to foul up change

    found my issue!!!

    well i beleive anyway

when doing a bios upgrade, win 7 was saying it was ok and it had complete, but when i looked it actually hadnt, and i couldnt get it to perform.

windows xp installed re-ran the bios upgrade util BIOS updated and now seems ok

(i had missed this and failed to notice the BIOS not updating)
