    cursor jumping (new hard drive)

HELP! We had to have a new hard drive installed in our HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC. Ever since then, the touch pad is way too sensitive and the cursor jumps all over the place. I am about to throw the laptop out the window!

    Need more info.
When they changed the hard drive, did they take and install a disk image, use the HP recovery program, or install W7 fresh?

Have you looked at the touchpad settings and tried tweaking them?

I will talk to the repair guys and ask what exactly they did. As far as the touchpad settings, I have searched the control panel settings for mouse, etc. and cannot find settings for the touchpad.

Fluff out those System Specs. Here's how:

    UPDATE YOUR SEVENFORUMS SYSTEM SPECS

User CP (3rd item in the top menu bar) |
in left-hand column, under Your Profile, Edit System Spec |

Use Speccy - System Information - Free Download
and/or SIW to gather info for filling in the blanks.

Do me a favor. Please add the word laptop or desktop to the “system manufacturer” block.

Provide full windows version info, such as provided by Speccy:
    MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader, Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor

Scroll down and click on the SAVE CHANGES button.

    =======================================

immediate solution is to use a mouse and when you type--do not rest your thumbs, fingers or palms on the touchpad area.

I'm going to go thru the steps of getting to changing some of those touchpad settings using my laptop which is not an HP.

    Control Panel | Mouse |
You will see a dialog with 6 tabs.
The tab of greatest interest to you is on the right end and is labeled Device Settings

Next click on the Settings button.

You have now hit the motherlode of touchpad settings.

There is also a possibility that your system is not up to date.

Please use this procedure to make sure that you are current:
    UPDATING YOUR WIN 7

ASSURE THAT YOU RECEIVE ALL UPDATES

WIN | type WINDOWS UPDATE | ENTER |
    Change settings (left-hand column) |
checkmark all four of the boxes | OK
    button

Approve any dialog boxes presented. Let Windows install any update features.

WIN is the key with the Microsoft flag on top.

    INSTALL CRITICAL UPDATES

    Check for Updates (left-hand column)
    Install
    ALL critical updates.
Restart your computer (even if not prompted)

Repeat this procedure until there are no more critical updates.

DO NOT TRUST the “Windows is up to date” in center of dialog. until you see that TWICE IN A ROW!

    INSTALL IMPORTANT UPDATES

Use the “critical update” procedure until all important updates are installed.

    INSTALL OPTIONAL UPDATES

Use the “critical update” procedure until all optional updates are installed.

Under Optional updates you will be presented with a list of about 34 language updates.
You can hide those updates so that aren't continually notified of those updates. When you click on 34 optional updates are available, then you
    a) highlight all of the language updates,
    b) right-click anywhere in the highlighted list.
    c) click on Hide Updates,
    d) OK button.
    UPDATE GOLDEN RULES
    Install ALL, yes, ALL updates.
This is Win 7 and not Vista or XP (eXPired).

    UPDATE IS HUNG –TAKING FOREVER

Hung is very doubtful unless you interrupted updates.

CTRL + SHIFT + ESC key combo will pop-up the Task Manager.
Lo and behold, Windows Update is still running!

You hold down the CTRL and SHIFT keys.
While holding them down, tap the ESC key once.

    =============================================
    =============================================

After all of these gyrations, let me know the status.

I sympathize Until I set my touchpad properties to switch off the touchpad when a mouse is connected, then my lazy hands were wrecking havoc.
