Windows 7 - touchpad freezes

touchpad freezes

I had to send my Dell Inspiron 1420 off to get the Nvidia Chip replace. They pulled the mother board and fixed it and reinstalled it. When I got it back I had to reload the HD with Windows 7-64 due to wiping it thinking that was the problem instead of the chip. It had XP before if that matters. Now my touchpad will work briefly then freezes for a couple seconds then works for a couple then freezes again. I've tried reloading everything. I tried it in safe mode. When I boot to my Windows 7 cd it seems to work. I've tried running the cd and letting it repair anything it wants but it doesn't help. Maybe they screwed something up fixing the Nvidia chip?? Any ides? Thanks.

Your problem is Dell only supports xp and 32 bit vista - Drivers & Downloads

If your Windows 7 DVD has both 64bit and 32 bit i would advice you to install 32bit Windows 7 then you could use the 32bit drivers on the above link - this is where it sends me when i click on Windows 7 (below) and then when i click on drivers under table of contents it returns you to the first link. In step 3 it says use vista drivers which will work if you can install Windows 7 32 bit - link:

Looking for Windows 7 Drivers? | Dell Asia Pacific

You may need to install some drivers in compatibility mode if they wont install normally - use windows update firstly:

To install a driver/program in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

On the other hand you might find a 64 bit compatible driver by just entering its name eg (more details if possible) need a touchpad 64bit driver for my Dell inspiron 1420 in bing or google search.

Thanks for your help. I resolved it by getting drivers for other dell models. I searched for "touchpad 64bit driver for my Dell inspiron 1420" and found a couple solutions one completely disable my keyboard and touchpad then the next solved the problem. Thanks again.

How about a link for that solution. Did you get the Touchpad tab back under Mouse Properties in the Control Panel?

Well I'm still having some issues so I'm trying your solution. My touchpad works for quite a while then it starts having some issues then I lose my keyboard. Starting to think I might have problems with my keyboard. I'll keep trying. Thanks
Update----Well I think the drivers I downloaded for my touchpad work but I start having trouble with my keyboard either not wanting to type or alternate between upper and then lower case. Then the annoying sticky key popup starts popping up and beeping at me. I'm starting to think I have an issue with my keyboard. Might buy one off ebay their cheap and see what it does. I finally got the sticky keys popup disabled, at least for now cause I've done it several times and it seems to have a mind of it's own.
Thanks
