I have the same computer. I have never had Fn+F8 make display options appear. It only makes the computer switch between having only the lcd display on, only the projector/monitor on, and having both on. I think what you might be looking for is what is displayed when pressing the windows key (inbetween the Fn and Alt keys) and P. This displays four options "Computer only", "duplicate", "extend display", and "projector only".

I also have a Dell Vostro, but a 1000. It has some Dell utilites for it to manage Dell buttons and functions. See if you can reinstall them. try a manual Windows update too.

No, Dell does not support upgrading the Vostro 1700 to Windows 7.

Just to clarify. Which button combo are you saying doesn't do any thing? Fn+F8 or Windows Key+P?

Actually both do not seem to work . The Vostro XP users manual suggest the Fn+F8 combo the Windows key + P can from this forum, thanks
