Major DVD Burner Issues Hi,
Some of you might know of my problem with my DVD burner. Let me tell you and explain the situation and problem in full.
When in Windows 7 on my system specs computer, when I insert any disks, empty or not, most of them appear as if nothing was inserted. Although its strange, any disc with data does not show, but only a few empty DVD's showed up... I tried burning data to it, but then I cannot see it anymore. When trying to use the BIOS to boot up the Windows 7 retail disc, it fails, just keeps trying for 5 minutes then just moves on to boot up the OS on the Internal HDD. I have also tried booting up an Ubuntu 10.10 CD, which also results in the same issue. I then tried loading Ubuntu 11.04 from a USB stick, and then inserted the Ubuntu 10.10 CD. It worked and showed up. I then tried inserting the Windows 7 DVD, but nothing showed up. I also tried inserting some empty DVD's which, if I recall correctly, most showed up. This is driving me nuts as I need to use the DVD reader to install OS's, boot up Ubuntu, install games, app's ect...
Help and suggestions would be really appreciated.
Thanks,

This sounds similar to a problem on my friend had on his desktop PC. He tried many different things; cleaning the lens, testing it in another PC, upgrading firmware, but in the end realised that it was broken & beyond repair and bought a new one. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom/DIY OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU Intel C2D E8400@4Ghz OC Motherboard ASUS P5Q-E, bios 2101 Memory 4x2GB Kingston HyperX 8500@1066Mhz Graphics Card Nvidia GTS450 OC Sound Card Onboard SoundMax Monitor(s) Displays Samsung Syncmaster 17" Screen Resolution 1280x1024 Mouse Gigabyte M6900 PSU Corsair TX-750 V2 Case Custom Tower Cooling Air: Arctic Cooling 2xF8 & F12; Akasa AK-968, 2xAK-HD-BL Hard Drives WD6402AAEX-640GB(system), WD10EALX-1TB(storage), other external disks & docking stations Internet Speed 10M/1M |

So I should go and get a new one? If so, should I send it to HP and let them replace it themselves, or should I buy one and replace it myself (I'm not on warranty). | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP Pavilion dv6-2020ev OS Ubuntu 12.10 CPU Intel Core i7 720QM Motherboard Its a HP secret... They're cheap to buy new these days, so getting a new one would be best IMO. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom/DIY OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU Intel C2D E8400@4Ghz OC Motherboard ASUS P5Q-E, bios 2101 Memory 4x2GB Kingston HyperX 8500@1066Mhz Graphics Card Nvidia GTS450 OC Sound Card Onboard SoundMax Monitor(s) Displays Samsung Syncmaster 17" Screen Resolution 1280x1024 Mouse Gigabyte M6900 PSU Corsair TX-750 V2 Case Custom Tower Cooling Air: Arctic Cooling 2xF8 & F12; Akasa AK-968, 2xAK-HD-BL Hard Drives WD6402AAEX-640GB(system), WD10EALX-1TB(storage), other external disks & docking stations Internet Speed 10M/1M |

One other thing first, although getting a new one may be your only choice.
Remove and re-install your cables going to and from the burner and if you have another cable try it as well. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom Build OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1 CPU Intel i7 3770k Motherboard Asus P8Z77-V LK Memory 8 GB Patriot G2 1600MHz DDR3 Graphics Card Sapphire Radeon 7870 Sound Card None Monitor(s) Displays Gateway FHX2402L Screen Resolution 1920 X 1080 Keyboard Logitech K800 Mouse Logitech T620 PSU Corsair 750 TX Case Cooler Master Cooling Stock fan Hard Drives OCZ Vertex 4 256 GB Internet Speed 15.20 Mb/s download 2.09 Mb/s upload (Speedtest.net) Other Info First Computer used: A Commodore Pet of course

As you talking about a Notebook, the bezel on the DVD drive will need to suit the HP notebook. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom/DIY OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU Intel C2D E8400@4Ghz OC Motherboard ASUS P5Q-E, bios 2101 Memory 4x2GB Kingston HyperX 8500@1066Mhz Graphics Card Nvidia GTS450 OC Sound Card Onboard SoundMax Monitor(s) Displays Samsung Syncmaster 17" Screen Resolution 1280x1024 Mouse Gigabyte M6900 PSU Corsair TX-750 V2 Case Custom Tower Cooling Air: Arctic Cooling 2xF8 & F12; Akasa AK-968, 2xAK-HD-BL Hard Drives WD6402AAEX-640GB(system), WD10EALX-1TB(storage), other external disks & docking stations Internet Speed 10M/1M |

Slasher Hi Slasher, I tend to agree with commodore pet post #6 It is just a case of undoing one screw on the underside of the laptop and gently prising the dvd drive out of its apperture and re seating it back in many times this as been proved to be the answer to this type of issue | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number self build OS win 7 ultimate CPU amd phenom x4 9600 Motherboard asus m2n32-sli deluxe Memory corsair twinxs 2x2gb Graphics Card 2x nvidia 1gb 8500gt Sound Card onboard Monitor(s) Displays 19" lg ring tft PSU oryxx tornado 750w Case thermaltake xaser lll Cooling artic freezer64 pro + 7 case fans Hard Drives maxtor sata 500gb
