External HDD disappears after restart

I'm new to this forum and also to Windows 7. We recently upgraded to Windows 7 on our computers (at work). There are 4 computers all running Windows 7 Pro 64bit on the Work Network. One of the computers has an external HDD (My Passport Essential USB 2.0 500 GHz).

The external HDD works fine and is accessible from all the network computers. However every time the computer is restarted or shut down for the night and turned on in the morning, the external HDD is gone. I have to unplug the USB cable and replug it in again. Then the drive is on the list in the Computer tab and available to the network again.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to keep the external drive from disappearing it would be greatly appreciated.

Maria

This may help.

To Disable Selective Suspend:

USB Selective Suspend - Turn On or Off

expand usb and ensure usb selective suspend is disabled.

you could also try the simple step of just waiting until windows boots to turn the device on.

While in Contol Panel:
Folder options
View tab, select (tick) Show hidden folders. files, and drives.

The device does not have a power button. So I tried your suggestion and it worked. Thank you so much for your help.
