Windows 7 - USB problems after installing SP1

I recently installed SP1 on my Windows 7 x64 system and I am now having trouble with some USB devices, specifically an external USB drive. The drive is a 500 GB Seagate connected via USB. My system is an i7 920 on an ASUS motherboard w/ 24 GB RAM.

I have a backup program that runs every night and backs up to the USB hard drive. I've been using this setup for a couple years on Vista then Win 7 and it was working fine.

After installing SP1, though, some of my other USB devices quit working every time the backup starts. For example, when the backup kicks in, my keyboard might stop working. Or my mouse. Or some other USB device. So I have to unplug the affected device then plug it in again - after that it works fine again. Well, until the next time the backup runs...

It doesn't happen every time the backup runs (maybe 80% of the time) and it's not always the same device(s) that quit working. As I said, sometimes it's the keyboard, sometimes the mouse, sometimes both, etc.

The same problem also occurs sometimes when I plug in my iPod.

As I mentioned, I never had this problem until I installed SP1 so it has something to do with that update.

Are there any known fixes for this issue?

Thanks - those links led me to an official update at Binary files in some USB drivers are not updated after you install Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

I downloaded the update and ran it and rebooted. Then the computer sat on the "Updating Windows" screen (or whatever it says before it gets to the desktop) for about 30 minutes. Seemed way too long for a 500 kB update...

So I shut it off and re-started, it did the same "Updating Windows" activity but moved on after 30 sec or so, then it seemed to be OK. Time will tell if the update fixed the problem.

A bit disconcerting that the bug fix is buggy...

Patience is the key in many of these "problematic" updates. It takes quite a while for the program to "move things around". People need to let it run and leave it alone until that hard drive light stops blinking constantly.

Alas, the problem remains...

Well, what we need now is a time machine.
To take us back to August, where you could run System Restore to restore the computer back to a point before you tried the aborted fix, so you could apply the fix again without interrupting it.

Which leads me to wonder if you got impatient and did not let the SP1 update completely install (it takes 30 to 45 minutes) before interrupting that.

You could try this fix: USB Selective Suspend - Turn On or Off to see if this is a more typical USB issue.
