I already have a pair of 4GB running in my 3-mth old machine, do you guys think it is a good idea to buy more now for the new machine I might buy 5+ years down the road?
I would agree with DeaconFrost. If you were thinking about buying RAM for a computer which you are only planning to buy in 5 years time, then, it would be a bad idea to get the RAM now, because the memory technology would very likely have changed by then. For example, 5 years ago, the in thing was DDR2 RAM. If you had bought DDR2 RAM in 2006 anticipating to buy a new PC this year (2011), the DDR2 RAM would end up having to sit in your showcase today because today DDR3 is the memory technology being used. The same would apply to buying DDR3 RAM now, in anticipation of buying a new PC in 5+ years from now.

If you are thinking of buying more RAM (say an additional 8GB) for your existing machine, then it should not be an issue. But surely, don't invest in any hardware for a machine which you are planning to get in 5 years time.

    Hope that makes sense.

Yeah, I knew what the answer would be, but I thought someone will convince me otherwise. They are so cheap!

I guess I'll save the money and buy a SSD.
