    Upgrading memory

    Hello,

I have got an old computer but would like to upgrade my memory.
    At the moment I have 4GB DDR2 PC2-5300 (333 MHz).

Would I be able to upgrade those to 800MHz PC2-6400? Or maybe combine them?

    Thanks for the help.

It depends on a lot of factors, but most likely, you wouldn't see any difference in performance if you did and were able to get them to run at 800 MHz. If you combined them, the memory will run at the slowest speed of the chips anyway.

Now, if you have a reason to need 8 GB over 4 GB, you'll see a difference with the increased memory, but only if the 4 GB is holding you back at this point.

As an example, if your board supports 8 GB of memory, and you currently have 4 GB installed at PC2-5300 speeds, your new 4 GB you could add would also run at PC2-5300 speeds. It seems more rare now, but mixing memory types and speeds can cause some stability issues. You would also need to make sure your board could handle that much memory.
