Need to connect to the net

Don't know if I am in the right spot but I am cleaning an old Packard Bell XP (2002 SP2) for a friend and have plugged in my switch to the motherboard (Intel D915PKW) ethernet socket – no go.
So slotted in a D-Link PCI card installed the driver (first) and tried it as it has worked in the past so that at least I can access some free security and CCleaner etc
But even this hasn't worked this time and I have tried the suggestions in the control panel but am really not very savvy with this stuff. So don't know what to do next as without the net I am going nowhere fast.

I know this is an XP query but I don't know of any XP forums like our Vista and 7 ones.
