Hello there, Wicca.

I'm an owner of a LG GH22NS50 and i've had it for almost 1 year. It has been great so far.

But since i haven't used a Sony Optiarc before, i can't tell you exactly the difference! i've used Samsung (it lasted 3 years), LG and Lite-On... My favorite so far has been the LG, quiet, does what it's supposed to do and cheap.

Try one, it costs about 20$, update the firmware to the latest one and give it a go. If it doesn't work, it's not like you lost 100$, it's about trial and error

Here: Newegg.com - LG CD/DVD Burner 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model GH22NS70 OEM - CD / DVD Burners

Cheers

So far, i haven't tested any scratched disks, but i guess no optical device is made to read scratched disks.

I'd say: there's no warranty that the LG (or any other brand) will read a scratch disk because the optical drive is not made for that. It depends on how scratched is the disk, what brand is the disk and at what speeds was it burned back on the days.

So, i really can't tell you.

Does Dad's PC read the scratched DVD in question here? there are disk polishing kits available which may restore a scratched disk to make it useable. Then burn a copy of it.
As stated no brand is inherently better at reading a bad disk. I have a LiteOn and a LG Bluray burner and bith read some scratched disks I have. Personally I think LG's line is superior to both Liteon and Sony, but that's me.
