Can you run diskmgmt.msc from the Run prompt in your Start menu and post a screenshot?
Sounds like your E: drive is working OK but no filesystem is recognized on it. Do you remember what you had formatted the drive as? I assume NTFS? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom-built OS Windows 7 Professional SP1 32-bit CPU Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz, overclocked to 2.7GHz Motherboard Asus PL5D2 Memory 3GB DDR2-667 (2x1GB + 2x512MB in dual-channel config) Graphics Card nVidia GeForce 9800 GT Sound Card on-board Realtek HD Monitor(s) Displays LG W2261 Screen Resolution 1920x1200 (DVI) Keyboard Standard Mouse Microsoft wireless optical mouse PSU Antec TruePower 2.0 Case Cooler Master Centurion Cooling various fans Hard Drives OCZ SSD Vertex Plus 60GB SATA (Firmware 3.55), 64MB cache

E: needs to be formatted. It doesn't have a recognisable file system.
To recover old data try first running RECUVA - a recovery program on it. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Own build (+ Recased Acer Aspire x1800) OS Windows 7x64 Home Premium SP1 x 2 CPU Intel i7 2600k Motherboard ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe Memory G.Skill Ripjaws (DDR3-1600) 2x4GB Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce GTS 450; Intel HD Graphics 3000(GT2+) Monitor(s) Displays Dell Ultrasharp IPS panel U2311H, Samsung SyncMaster P2350 Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech MK520 (wireless) Mouse Logitech MK520 PSU Seasonic M12II 520W Case Lian Li Lancool PC-K60 Cooling Case: 1x120mm, 3x140mm CPU: Hyper 212+ Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB (0309), Seagates 1TB Barracuda ST31000528AS + Internet Speed 6-7 Mbps Other Info Audio: Logitech Z523 2.1 |

Well there is software out there like Easeus data recovery wizard which works on RAW disks but it costs.
Formatting the disk first may reduce the chance of recovery. I note diskmanagement says the disk is empty but that could be just be because it has lost the file system.
You could try free Partition Wizard's "Partition Recovery" option (see free program list).
Hopefully someone else may come along with another suggestion. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Own build (+ Recased Acer Aspire x1800) OS Windows 7x64 Home Premium SP1 x 2 CPU Intel i7 2600k Motherboard ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe Memory G.Skill Ripjaws (DDR3-1600) 2x4GB Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce GTS 450; Intel HD Graphics 3000(GT2+) Monitor(s) Displays Dell Ultrasharp IPS panel U2311H, Samsung SyncMaster P2350 Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech MK520 (wireless) Mouse Logitech MK520 PSU Seasonic M12II 520W Case Lian Li Lancool PC-K60 Cooling Case: 1x120mm, 3x140mm CPU: Hyper 212+ Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB (0309), Seagates 1TB Barracuda ST31000528AS + Internet Speed 6-7 Mbps Other Info Audio: Logitech Z523 2.1 |

Was the E: partition ever encrypted? (You didn't say which filesystem it was formatted with either.)
Most recovery tools won't work at all if encryption was indeed used on this partition, since they won't see any filesystem structures at all, just junk data - which would explain why Recuva froze up. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom-built OS Windows 7 Professional SP1 32-bit CPU Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz, overclocked to 2.7GHz Motherboard Asus PL5D2 Memory 3GB DDR2-667 (2x1GB + 2x512MB in dual-channel config) Graphics Card nVidia GeForce 9800 GT Sound Card on-board Realtek HD Monitor(s) Displays LG W2261 Screen Resolution 1920x1200 (DVI) Keyboard Standard Mouse Microsoft wireless optical mouse PSU Antec TruePower 2.0 Case Cooler Master Centurion Cooling various fans Hard Drives OCZ SSD Vertex Plus 60GB SATA (Firmware 3.55), 64MB cache

Try Test Disk TestDisk - CGSecurity and check whether it could see your drive. If it does you may attempt to recover the files. It should also be possible to repair but your first priority will be to recover before attempting to repair or fix any problems. Do go through the detailed step by step procedure given in the documentation. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit |
