Hello lou2u. Welcome to the forum.
If you are plugging the drive into the USB ports on the desktop's case, then try plugging it into one of the USB ports in the rear - the ones that are connected directly to the motherboard.
This test is to see if the device is getting proper power. It is a common problem for some case USB ports to be under powered.
If that does not work then check:
- Go to Devices & Printers
- Right click on your Computer > Choose: "Device Installation Settings"
- Check your settings.
If you do not want Windows to update
drivers automatically then you could try the setting "Install
driver software from Window Update if it is not found on my computer" temporarily - just to test and see if there is a
driver issue for that external drive.
