OS hard drive warning?

The OS presented a hard drive warning message. This is the Event Viewer info:

'Windows Disk Diagnostic detected a S.M.A.R.T. fault on disk ST910021AS ATA Device (volumes C:\). This disk might fail; back up your computer now. All data on the hard disk, including files, documents, pictures, programs, and settings might be lost if your hard disk fails. To determine if the hard disk needs to be repaired or replaced, contact the manufacturer of your computer. If you can't back up (for example, you have no CDs or other backup media), you should shut down your computer and restart when you have backup media available. In the meantime, do not save any critical files to this disk.'

1. Is there anything proactive that I can and should do regarding the functioning of the drive?

2. Is this type of notice a generally good predictor of a failing drive?

It's a clear a message as you'll ever get that there is a problem with the drive.

Backup whatever is important to you, and then contact Seagate as your hard drive may be under warranty. If it is they should replace it.

I called Lenovo, gave them the error and they're sending a new drive.

Thanks,

The failing drive was a 100GB 7400 device. I was shipped a 160GB 7400 (probably) reconditioned drive. Acronis image restored and I'm most likely better off than before.

Good way to start the day. Maybe I'll just stay home so as not to screw it up :-)!

An excellent result then I'd say.
