IE 8 /Windows 7 Won't Recognize Media in CDDVD Drive

W7/IE8 & IE9 report no media in TSST corp CDDVD Writer, SH-S203B, SBO-4. However, on the same machine Nero 10 recognizes media and burns successfully. CDDVD Writer has latest firmware. Windows Update current. Computer>DVD RW Drive (D) > Properties > Hardware lists all three drives, 160 Gb Maxtor (Internal SATA HD), 500 Gb Seagate Free Agent GoFlex(External HD, USB 2.0) and TSSTcorp CDDVD Writer; should only the TSST be listed there? Device Manager reports drivers up to date, no abnormalities. Disc Management reports that "CD-ROM 0 is Online DVD." Disk Management > Properties > General reports TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S203B ATA Device, Location 1, Channel 1, Target 1, Lun 0 and that the device is operating properly; DVD Region 1. Disk Management > Properties > Volumes reports: Disk CD-ROM 0; Type: DVD; Status: Online; Partition Style: Master Boot Record (MBR); Capacity: 0; Unallocated Space: 0; Reserved Space:0. Disk Management > Properties > Driver reports: Driver Provider: Microsoft; Driver Date: 6/21/2006; Driver Version: 6.1.7601.17514; Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows.

Does anyone see anything in the described arrangement that would account for the failure to recognize media in the CD-ROM?

This is my first post. I hope I have posted it in the correct category.

You didn't say if you're trying blank media or discs that contain data.

Windows won't show anything when you insert blank media, this is normal.

I am using Fujifilm CD-R All Purpose, 700 Mb, 1X to 40X. They are new. When I attempt to format the discs, I get the "No Media" in the CD-ROM message after Windows/IE8 chugs for awhile.
It seems significant to me that third party burning software will work with the said CD's but W7 and IE8 will not.

Trust me, it isn't. This is perfectly normal behavior. Unlike Windows, the burning software expects blank media.

You can't - and don't need to - format blank CDs in Windows the way you would format a harddisk partition. CDs and DVDs use different filesystems for their data, and they're usually written to in one go, in their entirety. That's what the burning software is designed for.

I tried to burn with several new discs. Each time I got the message that the burn did not occur, no media in the drive, CD might become unusable, etc.

I can read CD's in the CD-ROM. Just can't burn.

OK, that's different or maybe I misunderstood you before. Which program are you using to (try to) burn the discs?

Is it possible that you're accidentally burning in test mode instead of really burning?

I am using Windows 7 HOme Premium and Internet Explorer 8 trying to burn discs. I was using IE 9 but thought it might be the problem and went back to IE 8. Same problem both places.

I can burn CD's using Nero but cannot with IE 8&9 and Windows 7.

I don't think I'm trying to burn in Test Mode. But maybe I am. HOw would I check?
