Monitor loses signal during reboot after install requiring restart

HP Pavilion Elite HPE-170t CTO Desktop PC
HP 2509M Monitor connected with HDMI cable

    Windows 7 64-bit

I bought this pc from HP in 2010. It ran perfectly until i got a virus a few months back and lost both hard drives due to corruption and had to start from scratch. I had a local computer shop install new drives & reinstall Windows as I am not that computer savvy. Everything is now up and running fine with the exception of this issue. In a nut shell the issue is whenever there is a delay in the pc rebooting due to software installation or windows update the monitor will lose signal usually right after the windows starting screen, but before the log-on screen appears. clicking the mouse or keyboard does not bring back the signal and the monitor just goes to sleep. I have to manually power the pc down at that point because i cannot see what it's doing. Just pressing the power button once on the pc does not always power it off at this point. Sometimes I even lose the montor signal after I log in and the desktop is loading for a few seconds the monitor will lose signal and go to sleep. If it's a straight boot-up or restart with no configuration going on in the background it seems to be fine and i can log-in normally. If I get into the desktop without losing signal then I never encounter any other signal loss or monitor issues until the next required reboot. Another thing it has done randomly a few times is if I put the pc into sleep mode, when i wake it the desktop will sometimes come up for a second and then the monitor will go black, but unlike the issue at reboot when this happens the monitor still shows it has an active HDMI signal even though the screen is black. Again nothing will bring back the signal and I am forced to manually power down the PC.

I took the pc back to the shop and they reflashed the Bios and confirmed the monitor and video drivers were up to date. They said they did not encounter any of these issues while they had it for two weeks so i do not know what to think. They suggested it may be a windows 7 glitch that may be fixed with a future update, but i don't think that's the case. I was thinking of connecting the monitor with a DVI cable to see if that made any difference. I really don't think it's a hardware issue, but i am puzzled as to why the computer repair shop said they did not encounter this once, unless they did not do anything that required a restart of the system. I understand it is very difficult to diagnose issues that happen randomly. The occurrence of this only after a software install or windows update requiring a delayed restart seems to be the only common symptom.

    Thanks in advance for help!

Well in this case i would recommend you to update the BIOS and the Video Drivers and that might resolve the issue for you.

    hey

well you are not the only one with that issue. it just happened to me last night with my new lenovo desktop after i installed some of the windows updates. and yes, its a hardware issue (videocard) even if you update the firmware. so my main solution was to put my original videocard. everything is running smooth. so i think you might need a new videocard.

Thank for your replies... I have been on the pc almost all day today and the more time I spend on it the more issues i experience... I did swap out and try the DVI cable and it did not fix the issue with the monitor losing signal. I installed Cyberlink Power DVD Ultra and tried to waych a blu-ray disk. Every time I played a disk after ~2-5 minutes the PC would just shut off as if someone yanked the power cord from the wall.... That also happened once before when I tried watching a video on You Tube last week. Then I opened up MS Word and tried to just copy some text to a doc and the screen went scrambled and I got the blue screen of death. That is the first one of those that has occurred. I restarted the pc in safe mode and still lost signal to the monitor even in safe mode. I dont know if all these problems can be linked back to a bad video card, but i'm thinking thats the next thing I am going to replace. I will have to rule things out by trial and error one by one I guess. Any other suggestions please post them... thanks!

oh wow.. is defently the videocard my friend. and the only way you will find out for sure, is if you can put another videocard on it. does your board have the vga connection in case you remove your videocard?..

ps: heres the videocard that is defect it and is doing the samething as your descriptions

Thanks for your reply... Well I went online last night and purchased a new video card at Fry's Electronics for in-store pick-up. There is a store about 10 miles from me and I am going to pick it up this morning, but now I am unsure the card I bought is compatible. I did some research since again as i'm not that knowledgeable about this stuff and decided to get as close to the same model board to ensure it's compatibility with my systems power supply, etc... My system graphics card is an 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5770(2 DVI, HDMI, DP, VGA Adapter). When I was looking at this model graphics card at Fry's I was confused as to why a card has so many manufacturers? They had cards by ASUS, Diamond, XFX, Apple, MSI. This just confused me, but the only one my local Fry's had in stock was an ASUS ATI Radeon™ HD 5750 1gb PCI-EXPRESS. What i'm concerned about is it does not say the board I currently have is PCI-Express. I have 3 expansion slots on my mother board, but one of them is being used by my SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme PCIE card. Can someone post if the card I bought will work before I pick it up today? It would be appreciated.

Here's a screenshot from the HP site showing the expansion slots I have available on my PC:
