External hd problems Hi all,
I have a Western Digital 750 gb external hd that I keep all of my media on. Ever since I installed windows 7 it has given me problems of dropping out. Every time I wake my machine from sleep, or restart it, the drive does not show up in my computer. I have to manually unplug it and plug it back in for windows to recognize it, which gets pretty annoying.
Any thoughts as to what might be going on? | My System Specs |

Are there any errors in the device manager? Have you tried reinstalling the driver for the ex-hdd? Have you tried switching usb ports assuming it's a usb connection? Have you tried update the firmware of ex-hdd? Have you tried to update your BIOS? Then check your system for any malware, spyware and virus's....which can cause some problems for some external devices. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom built OS Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit CPU AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Motherboard Gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4 Memory GSkill 4 X 2 GB PC 8500 Graphics Card XFX Radeon HD 6790 D Sound Card On board RealTek HD Monitor(s) Displays Dual monitors:Samsung SyncMaster S20B300 Screen Resolution 1600 X 900 Keyboard Logitech G510 Mouse Razor DeathAdder PSU Ultra X4 750 watt fully modular Case Thermaltake Overseer RX 1 full tower Cooling Core-Contact 92 mm CPU Cooler Hard Drives Seagate Barracuda 1TB (primary)

Sorry, I should have mentioned this in the first post: No errors, drivers are updated, and it's not the usb port. Just ran a full sweep for viruses etc and found nothing. Haven't updated firmware or BIOS, guess I will try that now. Thanks for the input | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 |

FWIW, before you do anything too drastic . . . is this a big issue? Why not just accept it's Win agro and leave it unplugged when you retire for the night?
As a bonus the drive is separate from the PC - so you can lock it up, in another room, perhaps? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Dealer made PC OS Windows7 home premium 32-bit CPU AMD Althonx2-240, dual-core 2.8GHz Motherboard ASUS M4N78 Memory 4G (2x 2Gb) Graphics Card 500Mb, three o/p VGA and 2xdigital Sound Card on MBO Monitor(s) Displays 19" LCD Widescreen format Screen Resolution 1440 x 900 Keyboard UK layout wired. mini-DIN PS2 connector on MBO Mouse USB-wired, PSU I think 600 W, it's over spec'd for the demand, IMHO Case Desktop -one of thiose highly-punched case to keep cool Cooling 8" slow fan, internal drive fans, PSU and CPU, low room temp Hard Drives All SATA: C;(and small restoration as D) 500G total with about 32G unused , 1x 500G (about 30Gb unused this holds old video/photo/audio files)
