Try going to device manager (start>type device manager>enter) and uninstalling and having windows redetect it (if it doesn't, restart computer). update if in device manager after it reinstalls:

what kind of cd/dvd player is it?

What does "one day its (sic) stopped reading CDs and DVDs" mean? what did you do on that one day to make it stop (installed programs, settings changed). and what tool software did you run in control panel?

Do go into windows update and install all important updates and any optional compatibility updates in windows. might do this a couple times because new updates become available after you install previous updates.

Portuga,

Just to make sure, you did everything I said? You haven't answered some of the questions I've asked, so I can't be sure you've followed all directions.

Any light blue text indicates a link to another webpage. please follow those links by clicking on them and following their directions

From what I can tell, your computer only supports xp and windows 2000 drivers. If you install the driver from this website (HP), then you might try putting the driver into compatibility mode (Follow the tutorial, but put it into compatibility for XP).
On the HP website, try auto-detecting to see if HP can find a driver for you. If not, download the xp x64 drivers and put them into compatibility mode via the link I've provided you

Before following the procedure above, I fixed the CD reading from another webpage CD-ROM/DVD Drive won't work [Solved] | Kioskea.net which says:

" Ok for the unrecognized CD in the drive for the writing process perform the following.

Power down your system

Once the system is down hold down the eject button on the drive and hit the power button to power back up.

MAKE SURE YOU HOLD THE EJECT BUTTON IN THE ENTIRE TIME!!!!

Once your system is completely up (log in screen, desktop up) let go of the eject button.

The drive will open and you can either close it or put your CD in.

This process of holding the eject button while the system restores is re-calibrating the laser.

Hope this helps!!! "

I am still trying to find the other answer for the tool inside the control panel, I googled it.

The device manager says, "This device is working properly." I also uninstalled and then reinstalled the drivers, and it still won't work.

there is a little detail I didn't mention, when I insert CD it is okay but when I insert a DVD, pop up a window asking to format the disk.

Note: if I am not wrong, this problem started when I updated CCLEANER and run it.
