It should just stay connected.. So sadly it sounds like a faulty drive / enclosure.
Are you able to try the drive on a second PC, to see if it does the same thing?

If it does then its almost certainly a problem with the drive, else a problem with the PC..

    Let us know

See if Windows is trying to put your external HD to sleep or if power management is enabled for the USB port or the HD's USB interface.

    how do i do that

found this and hope it helps
Try the following steps and check the result.
Step 1: Change the power settings
    a. Click Start, type power options and hit enter.
    b. On power options window, click "change when the computer sleeps"
    c. Click "Change advanced power settings"
    d. From the list of items, expand Hard disk.
    e. Change the "Turn off hard disk after" setting to "Never"
    f. From the list of items, expand USB settings and expand its sub item "USB selective suspend setting" and then change the setting to "Disabled"
    g. Apply the changes and check the result.

Probably already tried this I hope but does this behaviour happen on different USB ports on the PC?

I only ask as I remember an old school trick that instead of waiting for the machines to shut down (as they were sooo slow) we would stick some metal in the usb socket and short it, which killed the pc instantly..

Change the usb cable also if possible.. but if it worked 100% on your xbox then the cable is likely fine..

Can you give us a link to the product (from a shop site or manufacturers)

Only other recommendation is to look in the event logs directly after it happens the next time.. (really for technical users who know what they are looking at)

Those are in control panel, administrative tools, event viewer..
Then on the left hand side select Windows logs, then System logs.. double click that should list lots of system events.. Look for any warnings / criticals at the time the system rebooted and let us know - feel free to copy paste the text from one and we can see if it is relevant
