    Thanks Theog that explains things a bit. Seems Windows can enumerate drives arbitrarily. I swapped cables yet agin and it fell into where I think it should be. C is on SATA_0 and F is on SATA_5.

    Some programs require C: to be disk zero


    So from this thread it appears such programs will work only on single drive machines such as laptops.
