How do I safely add 3 external HDs to my brand new computer?

    are these new drives or used ones? if they are used, were they known to be working last time they were plugged in?
    there is a chance that the drive failed or the enclosure failed.

    They're all used. Some older than others.

    This is what I got with only the one attached. 1) asking if I wanted to initialize,2) saying 'Device not ready', 3) back to square one:

    I personally would hook up the drive that is not working to another PC and see if the problem follows the drive.
    I am thinking the drive failed on you.
