USB 3.0 & Cable Connections

HI.

Thanks for any help.

I have an external hd (Seagate Momentus Hybird) with USB 2.0.
Question.

I have a laptop with a USB 3.0 port.
If I purchase USB 3.0 cables to run from the external/2.0 drive into the 3.0 laptop -
will that allow for taking advantage of the USB 3.0 port ?
Or would I have to buy another external HD with 3.0 USB ports?

Thanks again.

The device would work (as USB3.0 is backwards compatible) but there would be no benefit in speed as the caddy device is still only USB2 by design. The drive itself should greately benefit but you would also need a USB3.0 Caddy, e.g. http://www.dabs.com/products/dynamod...JY7.html?src=3

The USB 3 ports have connectors for USB 2 and USB 3. When you plug in a USB 2 cable it makes contact with the USB 2 connectors and it will run at USB 2 speed. So you can use your USB 2 HD on the USB 3 port with its existing cable and it will run at USB 2 speeds. Your HD only has USB 2 connectors. Here is the pinouts for a USB 3 port.
