Upgrading a laptop keyboard

I have a customized Compal NBLB2 laptop. It's extremely nice, but it would be even better if I could put a backlit keyboard on it. I know it is possible to remove a keyboard from a laptop, as I have done it with an old Dell Latitude C640, but is it possible to buy and install a backlit keyboard into a laptop that did not come with a backlit keyboard? If not, its not a big deal. I can be happy with just having nice laptop hardware (Core i7 quad, 8 GB of DDR3), but a backlit keyboard would be great.
