Computer does not recognize DVD in player

When I play a commercial DVD, a movie for instance, the E drive shows no disk inserted. However, a CD plays with no problem. This was not always the case, but has been since I installed Windows 7 Home Premium

I apologize now for anything lacking in description. I am a computer user is the same way I am a TV or telephone user. I have some knowledge gleaned from prior corrective efforts like this but by no means am I well versed in the technology. I can follow/have followed directions resulting in successful corrective measures taken.

I have already done the registry check for high and low filters (they aren't shown so cannot delete).

I've looked through numerous previous similar messages with no joy.

Thanks, Bob

No, but I did, at Windows invitation, have it check for the latest drivers, etc. The report was that there were no updates available.

I wasn't able to do that. Dell offers no chipset drivers for my computer for Windows 7, only XP and Vista. I was able, though, to update the BIOS to the latest available. Unfortunately, that did not solve the problem but I did get a warm, fuzzy feeling from being able to do it.

thats the problem with older devices and newer software. The hardware inside isnt always supported after a while, and hence why theres no drivers available. try installing a vista version, it may work.

I have issues with windows home server and my hardware, as servers arent designed to run mid range graphics cards, but i use mine for Blu rays, no drivers were supported, but vista/7 versions worked.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. If there is a mismatch ( the Vista chipset being incompatible with Windows 7 maybe) will the software catch it and not install or will it go ahead anyway and completely mess up the computer?
