PC case front panel USB malfunction Hello,
I recently got a brand new computer case and today when I inserted external HDD, the computer reseted itself.HDD is working fine in motherboard USB ports, but when I want to connect the HDD device from front panel, the screen suddenly goes back and computer restarts. In device manager there is no problem discovered.
It resets even if I touch the USB port with the HDD connector. It can't be short circuit right ?
If somebody got an idea to fix this please post here I would highly appreciate it.

Sometimes it's an idea to disable legacy USB devices in the board BIOS, but in your case I suspect your front ports are not powered and the amount of current the drive needs causes the instability and restart.
Consider using a powered USB hub or extension USB cable linked to a rear motherboard port. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom built machine OS W7 x64 CPU Intel Q9300 2.5Ghz Quad LGA775 (Would like Q9650) Motherboard Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3R (F6 Bios) Memory 4Gb OCZ Gold 1,333Mhz Graphics Card Palit HD4850 O/C Sonic 512Mb DDR3, Dual DViD's Sound Card Azalia to twin Samson 50w Studio Monitors Monitor(s) Displays Twin Dell (E-IPS) U2311H 23.6" Screens Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz Keyboard Cherry PS/2 custom model Mouse Logitech M500 Laser Mouse PSU OCZ 600w Case Lian-Li PC8 acoustifoamed' aluminium tower Cooling Scythe 140mm Zipang Hard Drives Twin 1Tb Barracuda archivage, Twin TV/PVR 2Tb Samsungs, (80Gb Barracuda for the OS, but SSD envisaged...) I saw a video in youtube and he told me I should shut down and unplug the power cable from power supply and then plug it back in.After that those front panel USB ports are working fine.

What happens when you plug in a low power usb memory stick or wifi/mouse dongle? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom built machine OS W7 x64 CPU Intel Q9300 2.5Ghz Quad LGA775 (Would like Q9650) Motherboard Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3R (F6 Bios) Memory 4Gb OCZ Gold 1,333Mhz Graphics Card Palit HD4850 O/C Sonic 512Mb DDR3, Dual DViD's Sound Card Azalia to twin Samson 50w Studio Monitors Monitor(s) Displays Twin Dell (E-IPS) U2311H 23.6" Screens Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz Keyboard Cherry PS/2 custom model Mouse Logitech M500 Laser Mouse PSU OCZ 600w Case Lian-Li PC8 acoustifoamed' aluminium tower Cooling Scythe 140mm Zipang Hard Drives Twin 1Tb Barracuda archivage, Twin TV/PVR 2Tb Samsungs, (80Gb Barracuda for the OS, but SSD envisaged...) after some half an hour again trying to connect HDD and computer resets - same problem.
When i try to connect lower power device ( keyboard stick) then it works fine...
What could the problem be ?
I am very worried about it.
It even doesn't restart it blacks out and then starts like traditional vista and 7 asking if i want to start windows normally etc... | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 ultimate 32bit CPU AMD Phenom II X2 3,2 GHz Black Edition Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-MA74GMT-S2 Memory 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Graphics Card GTX 460 SE 1GB Sound Card Integrated Realtek Monitor(s) Displays HP w2007v PSU Xilence Redwing 580W Case HP m8000 Cooling CPU Cooler Master V8 Hard Drives 400GB HDD |

Front USB ports aren't powered like one's physically attached to the motherboard.
That means they cannot support devices which are power hungry.
I've suggested you consider a USB extension cable, running from the mainboard rear ports, or a powered USB hub (many monitors have these built into them nowadays). | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom built machine OS W7 x64 CPU Intel Q9300 2.5Ghz Quad LGA775 (Would like Q9650) Motherboard Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3R (F6 Bios) Memory 4Gb OCZ Gold 1,333Mhz Graphics Card Palit HD4850 O/C Sonic 512Mb DDR3, Dual DViD's Sound Card Azalia to twin Samson 50w Studio Monitors Monitor(s) Displays Twin Dell (E-IPS) U2311H 23.6" Screens Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz Keyboard Cherry PS/2 custom model Mouse Logitech M500 Laser Mouse PSU OCZ 600w Case Lian-Li PC8 acoustifoamed' aluminium tower Cooling Scythe 140mm Zipang Hard Drives Twin 1Tb Barracuda archivage, Twin TV/PVR 2Tb Samsungs, (80Gb Barracuda for the OS, but SSD envisaged...) and still the new case works sometimes and sometimes not ? | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 ultimate 32bit CPU AMD Phenom II X2 3,2 GHz Black Edition Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-MA74GMT-S2 Memory 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Graphics Card GTX 460 SE 1GB Sound Card Integrated Realtek Monitor(s) Displays HP w2007v PSU Xilence Redwing 580W Case HP m8000 Cooling CPU Cooler Master V8 Hard Drives 400GB HDD |

Perhaps the new cases front port cables are not of the same quality. Maybe you have connected to a different USB header. There might be a fault in the front port array. Does your new case have the same power supply and all the same powered components as were in the old case?
You didn't specifically give all the relevant information in your opening post.
Based on what you have provided an actual diagnosis can't be given, merely possible cause. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom built machine OS W7 x64 CPU Intel Q9300 2.5Ghz Quad LGA775 (Would like Q9650) Motherboard Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3R (F6 Bios) Memory 4Gb OCZ Gold 1,333Mhz Graphics Card Palit HD4850 O/C Sonic 512Mb DDR3, Dual DViD's Sound Card Azalia to twin Samson 50w Studio Monitors Monitor(s) Displays Twin Dell (E-IPS) U2311H 23.6" Screens Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz Keyboard Cherry PS/2 custom model Mouse Logitech M500 Laser Mouse PSU OCZ 600w Case Lian-Li PC8 acoustifoamed' aluminium tower Cooling Scythe 140mm Zipang Hard Drives Twin 1Tb Barracuda archivage, Twin TV/PVR 2Tb Samsungs, (80Gb Barracuda for the OS, but SSD envisaged...) Yes, all parts are the same, just a new case. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 ultimate 32bit CPU AMD Phenom II X2 3,2 GHz Black Edition Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-MA74GMT-S2 Memory 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Graphics Card GTX 460 SE 1GB Sound Card Integrated Realtek Monitor(s) Displays HP w2007v PSU Xilence Redwing 580W Case HP m8000 Cooling CPU Cooler Master V8 Hard Drives 400GB HDD |
