"All your [DVD/CD] drives are set to disabled"

Alright, about a month ago, my Blu-Ray drive in my laptop would not show up in My Computer and had the ! symbol in device manager. I followed the steps outlined in: Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs and was able to resolve that issue. Now a new issue has shown up where DVD writing software, specifically Roxio Easy Media Creator 10 LJ, gives the message: "All your drives are set to disabled. On this operating system, in order to start Easy Media Creator 10 LJ you must either physically remove your drive(s) or enable at least one drive."

Here are the steps I have followed so far to help those helping me not to have to repeat steps already tried:

1. I have tried uninstalling the Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller (from IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers) as that is what connects my device. I even deleted the driver software for the device before restarting the computer and then did a clean install of the newest version.
2. I have tried disabling then enabling the Blu-Ray drive device in Device Manager.
3. I tried uninstalling the Blu-Ray drive device in Device Manager, restarting the computer, and letting Windows re-install.
4. I have downloaded and installed the latest PXEngine from PX Engine - Description and Download with no results.
5. I tried running Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs again, but the issue persists.

Any ideas?


Edit: I should mention that I cannot repair the Roxio program as it came with my laptop, so the only way to fix it would be to recover my computer to factory settings and lose all my programs setup. I have backup images, but I believe the oldest image I have started with the drive not recognized in Windows problem from a month ago (I didn't realize I was having that issue until after I made the backup).

There may be a firmware update for the drive too. If you can, power off, take out the drive, boot up, power back off and put the drive back in and boot up. sometimes this will force a component to be recognized properly.

I had a HP once that had a recovery partition that could repair individual programs.

The firmware is up to date and the BD is selected for recording. My recovery partition is hidden; would you recommend unhiding it in Disk Management? I will look into how to remove my drive, as well.

Alright, I turned off the computer, removed all power sources, physically removed the drive, replaced power sources, and started Windows. Then shut down the computer, removed all power sources, physically replaced the drive, replaced power sources, and started Windows. Still Roxio insists my devices are disabled.

I also reset the CMOS, cleared temporary memory, and reset BIOS software connections with the Hardware. Roxio continues to have issues. I will try to get my recovery partition to show and see if I can find the MSI files for Roxio.

Here is a post (14 May 2011) in Roxio Forum. "EMC 10 is not compatible with W7. Roxio Creator 2010 and 2011 are compatible."

Another post (29 March2009) in Roxio Forum. "I have had this same problem with Roxio Creator Premier SD 10.2 on my new Dell laptop. I am running a Vista 32 bit os. Dell has done everything from reformatting the harddrive, replacing the optical drive twice, replacing the mother board, installing the patch and even replacing the laptop itself. The replacement laptop still does the exact same thing. I don't know what to do now and they have given up. :-( Any suggestions?"

Yeah, I am not thrilled with Roxio's apparent bugs either, but it is a nice program when it works, which I was able to get it to do again. Here is what I did (for anyone with future issues):

Note: Others may have to create their recovery discs first; I already had made mine, so this went smoothly.
1. I tried to unhide my Recovery drive through Disk Management. The only option that showed up when I clicked on it was "Help", so I forewent that route.
2. I decided to open an elevated command prompt (start menu->all programs->accessories->right click command prompt->Run as administrator)
3. Typed Diskpart
4. Typed List Disk
5. Type Select Disk 0 (mine was Disk 0, someone else may have a different number)
6. Typed List Volume
7. Typed Select Volume 4 (Label Recovery; again, may be a different number for someone else).
8. Typed Assign Letter=L (I chose L since no other drives had this letter)
9. Left the elevated command prompt open so I could later remove the drive letter.
10. Opened My Computer from my desktop (or from Start Menu->My Computer/Computer)
11. Opened L: and ran L:\Autoplay\autoplay.exe
12. Selected the option to install programs
13. It told me to insert Disc 1 of my Recovery Discs (thankfully I had made them) to install programs.
14. I had to reinstall VAIO Care (which required inserting disc 3 of my recovery discs) as I had removed my version. I do not recommend this program due to its registry cleaning snake oil feature which has botched my computer twice now.
15. Selected Roxio Easy Media Creator from the list of programs to install.
16. Installed Roxio Easy Media Creator. Did not restart at this point as the installer suggests...
17. Opened up the elevated command prompt I had left open and typed "Remove" (without quotes) to remove the drive letter
18. Restarted my computer to finish the installation of Roxio Easy Media Creator.

Edit: I should point out that doing the above steps in no way compromised my recovery partition. I am still able to boot to that partition by pressing ALT + F10 when the computer turns on.

Edit2: Also, at this time I am unable to give you rep Britton30 because I have to spread it around first, but I wanted to thank you for your suggestions in pointing me toward my recovery partition.
