In 2001 I saw a CD/DVD-RW in a PC store in Indianapolis priced at $998
Is that even possible ? was it made out of gold ?

Will do.

BTW:
My pc is this:

Does it need a special burning unit or can it be any ?
That picture is labeled HP Slimline s5000.

http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content/...es_desktop.jpg

According to these MOBO specs for that model,

Motherboard Specifications, A8SN-CF (Phoenix) HP Pavilion Slimline s5000 Desktop PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Under internal connectors, it says "Mini IDE for optical disk drive"

His could be different, but it's a start.

Hopefully the 'mini' part is on the board and the drive has a standard connect.

Oh Oh. Warning!
The mini IDE suggests that they are using a slim DVD drive, normally found in laptops, using an IDE to mini-IDE converter.

It would be best to get that model number by any means necessary and check for the correct part number. Better, pull the old drive and get all the information off of it.

It will have model # and part number, either you can use to get an exact replacement drive or a compatible drive.

Pay attention to the connector in the back of the drive and be sure the new drive has the same connector.

If you have a computer shop nearby another good thing to do would be to remove the drive and take it with you to the shop. They may be able to test the drive there to determine if it is truly bad.

This is what a laptop optical drive looks like and the mini IDE connector:

Good point TVeblen,

According to this video HP Pavilion Slimline s5000 PC

The tower itself is only 12 1/4 inches tall, so I can see them putting a laptop ODD in it.

Just found a parts list here:
HP Pavilion Slimline s5000 Desktop PC series

Your exact model number for the slimline is needed to find the exact ODD part, but I looked at 5 random units and most have this drive:
16x DVD+/- R/RW SATA SMD dual layer optical drive - With LightScribe and external eject feature
Loading...

All SATA drives I may add.

Denis, Device Manager might give a clue to the model number of the ODD, here's mine...
