    dvd burner wont read dvd-r

i have an hp 740b and it says it burns dvd+ or - r and cds
i have successfully burned over 25 dvd+r but now i bought a pack of dvd-r and it wont read it
    on image burn it says
device not ready (medium not present)
and in my computer it doesnt read the dvd-r
the dvds are the radioshack brand called gigaware...i dont think that has anything to do with it though
i tried installing windows xp but still had the same problem so i reinstalled windows 7 rc

Try a different brand of disk - some drives are actually quite fussy about what they can and cannot recognise. Once you have located a brand, then stick to it. Personally, I use Verbatim on my system.

A firmware upgrade for the DVD drive may be available. It may or may not address the issue.

Be careful here. I've upgraded the firmware of optical drives in the past and they've turned into technological door-wedges.
