You need to format the disk in drive E: before you can use it.

Hi,

I've just recently sent my custom pc for repairing. It turns out that the mother board and P.S.U. were toasted. I can't get back my pc at least for 2 months.

I took my previous hard drive out form the pc and then bought a 3.5 SATA HDD External Enclosure (Hornettek Viper) and installed my hard drive inside there. (WD 1TB [Two partitions C: and D: ( Where all my stuff is ) ]

Let's get to the problem now,

When I insert the hdd into my friends's laptop usb port, his computer is able to detect it but it shows me an error:

You need to format the disk in drive E: Before you can use it.

Do you want to format it?

Format disc , Cancel

Is there any way I can encounter this problem? I do not want to format my hd. I've put all my files and pictures in there. Those are very important to me. It's 3 years worth of work. I did not made any back up.

Please help me if you can, I am in an urgent situation here. I've tried everything.

* I've tried inserting the hdd into ubuntu, xp, mac and it doesn't work. XP asked me to format and mac too.

Thank you very much.

I'll strongly appreciate any help given

[EDIT]
I have tried fixing my hd with mac's disk utility, and it says I am unable to fix it
* Mac is able to detect my two partitions but i still have to format before using it.
Also, ubuntu doesn't detect my hd at all

Found my PC hard drive model: Western digital Caviar Green Power 1TB 3.5" HardDisk/AdvancedFormat/7200rpm/64mb/SATA II 300

[EDIT]
Got my computer back, plugged hard drive inside of computer, everything is back to normal. Turns out PSU was fried. thanks for helping everyone!
[/EDIT]

You may try some data recovery software like Recuva or EaseUs data rrecovery to recover your data. But, you must also realize that if tour PSU went out and fried your motherboard, it may have fried other components as well.

So it is a custom made external disk ?
Try an alternative. Shut the laptop down , plug in the usb port (ports, if sata and power are separate there) , and power on the laptop. If it is configured now ?

XP and Mac prompted to format drive ... what does Ubuntu say ? If ubuntu can access it, you can back your data up in Ubuntu .

Was your PC set to AHCI or IDE?

What are the settings on the laptop, AHCI or IDE?

Hi, essenbe
I will try using recovery software like the ones you've given me if it's the last resort when I have to reformat it cause I still have Windows 7 HP and Microsoft Office inside it. I guess my graphics card and pc casing switch should be gone as well, I still need to wait until after new year for the news.

Thank you, essenbe

Hi Arc,

Err, I am not sure that it is a custom made external disk but all I've did is that I bought a 3.5 HDD external hard drive enclosure, this one Hornettek Viper U3 USB 3.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure Review | Review the Tech

Ubuntu can't even detect my drive.

Thank you, Arc.

Hi dave76,

I am unsure about my pc and laptop settings, I am very sorry about that, I am a kid to computer stuff. I remember resetting my PC bios settings to default???? if that is the settings

Also this is my pc hard drive model:
Western digital Caviar Green Power 1TB 3.5" HardDisk/AdvancedFormat/7200rpm/64mb/SATA II 300

This is my laptop settings I found in disk management, I am unsure if its AHCI or IDE. I did not connect to any other usb devices.
.

Thank you, dave76
