CPU Upgrade from Pentium D ? Hey guys, I have a slightly older desktop that has an Pentium D "Presler" 925 at 3Ghz and wanted to upgrade it to a Core 2 Extreme "Conroe XE".
The computer's chipset is a Intel Q965 Express Chipset It runs with a max Rated FSB of 1066Mhz. The current Pentium D has TDP 95 Watts while the Conroe XE has a TDP of 75-80 Watts.
My only question is: Should I anticipate any problems in the upgrade? My only fearis the bios not supporting the CPU as this computer is an HP Compaq dc7700.
Any thoughts?
Edit:
What about the possibility of using a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 | My System Specs |

Hello there, ionbasa!
Well, that architecture, despite being awesome and powerful, i'd say it's a little outdated, if you're upgrading using some parts (let's say: motherboard and ram) and if you can find a C2Q for a small amount of money, go for it...
Otherwise i'd suggest building a new rig.. with 500$ you can do wonders.. RAM is dirt cheap, you can find 16GB DDR3 1600 Corsair Vengeance LP for 77$, and a Core i5-2500k for 220$, a P67 or Z68 "basic" motherboard and you're good to go!

What's your budget? Well budget wise up to about $700, but a local computer shop had a few of these CPUs on sale and thought about upgrading one of my PCs. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP Pavilion g7-1350dx OS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 CPU AMD A6-3420M APU Memory 4.0 Gb DDR3 838 MHz Graphics Card AMD Radeon HD 6520G Sound Card IDT HD Audio Screen Resolution 1900x 600 Hard Drives 500GB Hitachi HTS547550A9E384 |

Well, if the price is good, go for it, but.. 700$ can get you a really good PC, you could just sell the one that you want to upgrade and buy a new one
P67/Z68 + i5-2500k + 16GB DDR3 1600MHz = awesomeness and you won't spend that much.. even though, if the sale price is good (the one you're telling me about) go for it... what do you have to lose? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Built by Myself OS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (64-bit) CPU Intel Core i5-2310 @ 2.90GHz Motherboard MSI PH67A-C43 (B3) Memory Kingston KVR 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3 @ 1333MHz Graphics Card PNY XLR8 GTX 560 Ti 1GB GDDR5 Sound Card Realtek HD Audio (ALC 892) Monitor(s) Displays LG W2353V-PF Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 (HDMI) Keyboard Logitech MK320 Wireless Keyboard Mouse Logitech MK320 Wireless Mouse PSU Thermaltake Toughpower XT 575w Modular 80 PLUS Bronze Case Cooler Master CM Storm Enforcer Cooling Thermaltake Frío, CM MegaFlow 200mm (2), CM 120mm (1) Hard Drives Samsung HD502HJ (500GB), ExcelStor J8080S (80GB) Internet Speed dl: 1024kbps, ul: 512kbps |

Well I look over the prices and if it is better I will definatly buy a new mobo + CPU | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP Pavilion g7-1350dx OS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 CPU AMD A6-3420M APU Memory 4.0 Gb DDR3 838 MHz Graphics Card AMD Radeon HD 6520G Sound Card IDT HD Audio Screen Resolution 1900x 600 Hard Drives 500GB Hitachi HTS547550A9E384 |

Q965 chip set supports only old generation Core CPUs. there is no quad core support i think.
I think any core cpu is better than old netburst architectutre cpu.
netburst architeture in my opinion was not very good, thats why intel stopped its development. and focused on core.
new case+mobo+ram+cpu is best way to upgrade. any sandy bridge cpu will outdo Presler in most tasks (if money is an issue H61 mobo + I5 2400 is good choice)
otherwise you may search for cheap used Core 2 duo (like E6600) | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Self Built PC OS Windows 7 pro 64bit. CPU Upgrade from Pentium D ? Even if you went to the cheaper core i3 platform you'd see a massive performance leap even from the core2 family.
$700 is a decent budget to have! Treat yourself to a new pc! Your pentium D rig if you've had it from new has done you well | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Built by badgers!!!
