Patching external HDD to PC power supply

Sorry, I realize this isn't actually a Windows 7 question, but ....
I have a 500gb external drive and keep burning out 12v adapters for it. Currently the only ones available locally are switchable 600mA which is too small, so I'm thinking to just cut the cable off the dead ps and patch it in to a spare 4 pin molex off the regular PC ps until I can find something with a 12v 2A output. Is there any reason that shouldn't work ?
