Can I run a hard drive using XP in a Windows 7 system?

Assuming the hard drive for my last (XP) system wasn't the part that failed, I'd like to find some way to use it in my new computer. The old hard drive has an expensive program on it that I need for work, and the program either won't work at all or wont work without an upgrade according to the supplier when I asked why I can't run the program using Windows 7. Is it possible to install it in the new case and run the XP based programs?

If you gave us your system specs we might be able to tell you.

If your hardware supports it you can run a virtual XP machine in win 7.

You CANNOT run an XP program, on the xp driver in win 7.

The XP program would have to be "registered" with the OS (win 7)

Probably not. It will likely try to load the drivers for the old hardware that isn't there anymore. Even if you get to the desktop, Activation will fail as a result of all the new hardware. If its an OEM version you legally can't transfer it to a new motherboard/system. You could try it but I wouldn't get my hopes up that it will work OK. If you have the correct version of Windows 7, XP mode may be an option. I believe you need Pro or better to install XP Mode.

I've got XP pro and 7 pro, but the program wont run using the XP mode on the new system. The publisher of the specialized software is kind of shady, and it looks like the answer is going to involve going to another software supplier. Thanks for the help.
