New Processor

I currently have the Dell Inspiron 580s and I have the 1st gen core i5 650 at 3.2GHz
and was wondering id I could upgrade to the 2nd gen i5

Not that I'm aware of. They are different sockets. 1st gen is 1156 and 2nd gen is 1155.

That's the bitch with Intels. They change the sockets every 5 minutes. But your case is not too serious - you would probably not gain a lot anyhow.

Yes the 2nd gen i5 is a 1155 socket. It is not compatible.

You would need new motherboard, cpu and ram. Which may not fit in your dell case.

I would suggest a new system altogether if you wish to upgrade.
