Cant read old external HD from Win 7

Hi,

I have connected an old internal hard drive to my Win 7 laptop with a USB adapter, and get the well-known "You must format this drive for it to be used" message. In the Disk Management tool, the File System type shows up as RAW, and contains about 39 GB of data. I have been perusing forums and have not found a solution. There are no options when I right-click on the drive letters (there are 2 for the one hard drive) in DM that help; just format the drive (which I will of course not do because I will lose the data) or change the drive letter or make the drive active. When I try to read the drive, I get "corrupted and unreadable". My wife is not sure if this HD is from an XP or maybe even pre-XP computer, and the fact that the type is RAW has me worried, I expected FAT32. Advice on how to access the data?

Thanks!
