HP Mini crispified my mouse adapter?

I left a mouse adapter inside the USB port of my HP Mini laptop. I never used the mouse, but kept it in there just incase. Never gave me any problems until i noticed a burning smell coming from the case. I started receiving tooltips in the corner that the adapter wasn't being recognized, and so i reached to pull it out and discovered it was very hot.. after pulling, it had split into two parts.

How this did happen? The way it was built, the case never gets enough cooling.. but it doesn't seem normal for heat to have gone straight to the port like that either, other components should have melted way before that.

My guess would be that the dongle was the problem, early failure. I don't think the netbook made it hot enough to cause a problem.

What you referred to as a mouse adapter is more commonly known as a dongle.
